Dove Hunting Tactics

Good dove hunting comes down to finding the field doves want to use and sitting where they fly.

Setting up on a dove field

Find the food

Harvested grain fields, sunflowers and weedy fields with bare ground hold doves. Scout in the days before the opener and watch where birds come and go.

Watch the water

Late in the afternoon, doves visit ponds and stock tanks with bare banks where they can land and walk to the water.

Sit on the flight lines

Doves follow tree lines, fence lines and gaps between trees. Sitting under a flight line with a little cover behind you beats sitting in the open middle of a field.

Shoot safely in a crowd

  • Know where every other hunter is sitting.
  • Never shoot at low birds.
  • Wear shooting glasses; falling shot travels a long way.
